In addition to the specific Estate Planning that I do as an Elder Law attorney, I work with individuals and couples of all ages to help them think through how they wish to set up their estates for themselves, their children or other individuals or causes. For couples with young children, naming a Guardian to care for their children in the event of their deaths is a preeminent concern. For every client I stress the need to plan not only for death but for disability or incompetency. Simple documents, such as a Health Care Proxy and a Durable Power of Attorney, can avoid the complications of Guardianship. Estate and gift tax considerations, as well as income tax issues, are important for estates over a certain size. The size of an estate where taxes become a concern is changing as a result of recently passed tax laws. Keeping up with changing laws is an essential component of my services as an Estate Planner. |
